Overview

Worcester County, MD, follows the building codes as outlined in the Maryland Building Performance Standards (COMAR 05.02.07). Worcester County, MD Municipal Code § 27-2 (A. adopted and B. amended). The Maryland Building Performance Standards adopt the 2015 IBC and IRC; therefore, Worcester County adopts them as well. Maryland Building Performance Standards  (COMAR 05.02.07) § 02.04 A1 (adopt IBC), § 02.04 B (amend IBC), § 02.04 A2 (adopt IRC), § 02.04 C (amend IRC).

Residential Building Code

Maryland adopted a model state residential code but it is not in force unless adopted locally.See PLRB, Maryland Building Codes for more information on state level codes.

Worcester County adopted the 2015 IRC, locally. Note that adoptions usually come with amendments. So, it is important to review those amendments in addition to the unamended model code.

Existing Buildings

Existing buildings, meaning buildings that were built in accordance to code at the time of construction, typically merit extra consideration in a current updated code.

In the amendments, the county does NOT adopt Appendix J as part of the code. Maryland Building Performance Standards (COMAR 05.02.07) § 02.04 A1 (adopt IBC), § 02.04 B (amend IBC), § 02.04 A2 (adopt IRC), § 02.04 C (amend IRC). Appendix J provides guidance on existing buildings.

Commercial Building Code

Worcester County adopted the 2015 IBC, statewide with limitations. Note that adoptions usually come with amendments. So, it is important to review those amendments in addition to the unamended model code.

All the provisions in the Appendices are adopted as part of the IBC except those in Appendices A, B, D, E, and K.
